Changes to China’s Footprint-is it Shrinkable

With China having the potential of becoming the next great nation, it is as important as ever that China takes an enviromentally friendly route. China has the largest populations in the world and exports more goods then any other nation, which means they can have the greatest impact on the world.

Liu Zhenya — the president of the largest electricity provider in China — states that the company has set its goal to produce thirty-five percent of its energy from “low emission” sources by the year 2020 at a conferance in Beijing. While China is the world leader in renewable energy, only eight percent of the energy China produces comes from “low emission” sources. China is desperatly trying to improve the amount of “low emission” energy they consume, but within the next decade the amount of energy China consumes is going to double. China’s energy consumtion has more then tripled the world average, and is growing rapidly.

What steps is China taking to go green?

China initiated a recycling bill in which companies that create a lot of pollution will be watched over by the central government to ensure that they are taking necessary steps to reduce pollution. The goal of the bill is to help reduce the overall pollution China creates, taking a step in the right direction towards a better tomorrow.

Railways have helped China reduce its large fossil fuel usage. These railways carry millions of passengers each day saving a lot of fossil fuel and reducing the amount of fumes being put into the air.

Despite the steps China is taking to go green, they have a long way to go. With the world’s largest population and energy usage, it is important that China stops tip-toeing in the right direction and starts stretching its legs and making big steps to a better tomorrow.
